Discover Bordighera: Hidden Gem of the Italian Riviera – Markets, Dining, and Coastal Charm

Mari

Many visitors to Nice are familiar with the Friday markets in Ventimiglia, but fewer travelers take the train to the next stop, Bordighera, on Thursdays. The same markets, but in a charming little town! The market area starts right next to the train station and stretches along the coastline for a long way.

A day trip to Bordighera, whether on a Thursday or not, is a wonderful way to explore the Italian Riviera. The small town essentially has three areas: the seaside promenade, the town center, and the old town.

Seaside Promenade at the Italian Riviera

The promenade offers several excellent restaurants, most of them specializing in seafood made with fresh ingredients. Prices are more affordable compared to the French side of the border. My top recommendations are:

  • Paloma – The catch of the day is always a good choice, and there’s often a delicious vegetarian option. Address: Lungomare Argentina 11, Bordighera.

  • Marmura – Located opposite Paloma, known for its excellent raw fish dishes and a delightful truffle pizza. Address: Lungomare Argentina 24, Bordighera.

  • La Réserve – My absolute favorite! A bit further down the promenade, past the small chapel. Their stuffed anchovies are unbelievable! Address: Via Arziglia 20, Bordighera.

Note: On weekends and Thursdays, it's a good idea to book a table in advance!

During the summer, you can rent a sunbed and umbrella for a reasonable price if you want to spend time on the beach (it's a pebble beach like in Nice).

Spa Experience

The rooftop spa at Hotel Parigi is open to non-guests for €30 per person. It includes access to the sauna, hammam, salt room, and jacuzzi. Massages are available for an additional fee. After your spa session, you can relax on the terrace with an herbal tea and soak up the sun.

Town Center

The town center is home to great restaurants and a covered market open daily. Some highlights include:

  • Da Monica – A family-run restaurant located in the town area. Address: Via Vittorio Emanuele II 116, Bordighera.

Old Town

The old town is located uphill but can easily be explored within a day, as distances are short.

If you’re planning a two-day visit, consider these accommodations:

  • B&B Borgo – Thoughtfully designed interiors, excellent breakfast, great location, and parking available.

  • Hotel Parigi – Splurge on a sea-view room to enjoy sunsets from your private balcony. In summer, the hotel has its own beach.

  • Grand Hotel del Mare – A luxury option with a pool, private beach, spa, and an excellent restaurant.

Additional Activities

Bordighera is also known for its beautiful gardens. If you’re traveling by car, stop at the exotic Hanbury Botanical Gardens near the border. It’s a stunning attraction that adds to your Italian Riviera experience.
